Donald Trump Campaign Sign | Donald Trump
It has been nine months since the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump, took office in January 2017. While opinions are very divided between those who support President Trump and those who do not, on Oakland University’s campus it can be hard to tell where a student opinion’s lay.
Oakland University journalism students have been tasked with collecting student’s opinions on President Trump and his performance so far. The Oakland Post, Oakland University’s independent student newspaper, reported that 300 participants have contributed since mid-September.
Students Anna Robb, Daniel Ashcraft and Starr Brown set out to see if there is a relationship of student opinion to those who live on campus to those who commute to campus. Each student polled was asked this series of questions:
- Class Standing
- Do you live on campus or commute?
- Where are you from?
- As of today, do you approve or disapprove of Donald Trump’s performance?
- On Inauguration Day, did you approve or disapprove of Donald Trump’s performance?
- Has your opinion changed and why? If your opinion has not changed, why?
Student opinion from the data collected has been analyzed into an interactive map analyzing where students are from. Blue represents students who disapprove of President Trump’s performance so far and have disapproved of President Trump since Inauguration Day. Yellow represents students who opinion has changed between Inauguration Day and now. Red represents students who have approved of President Trump since Inauguration Day to now.
Out of the 31 Oakland University students who participated in the survey, only two students (6.5%) have changed their opinion of President Trump over time. 12.9% of students polled approve of President Trump’s performance in the last nine months. The majority of students polled, 80.6%, continue to disapprove of President Trump’s performance.
The three students who approve of President Trump either commute or live on campus showing that Oakland University’s student population does not have a correlation between it’s on campus and commuting population.
